Founded in 1895 in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park, the de Young Museum has been an integral part of the cultural fabric of the city and a cherished destination for millions of residents and visitors to the region for over 100 years.

Our guide to De Young Museum and Legion of Honor

In October of 2005, the de Young Museum re-opened in a state-of-the-art facility that integrates art, architecture, and the natural landscape in one multi-faceted destination that will inspire audiences from around the world. Designed by the renowned Swiss architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron and Fong & Chang Architects in San Francisco, the de Young provides San Francisco with a landmark art museum.

What will you see at the de Young? The museum's collections include American painting, sculpture, and decorative arts from the 17th to the 21st centuries; art from Africa, Oceania, and the Americas; costume and textile arts; and international modern and contemporary art.

Here’s a look at some highlights: American Painting: George Caleb Bingham, Boatmen on the Missouri, 1846; , William Michael Harnett, After the Hunt, 1885; Frederic Edwin Church, Rainy Season in the Tropics, 1866; Albert Bierstadt, California Spring, 1875 Sculpture: David Smith, Zig V, 1961 Art of the Americas: Stela with Queen Ix Mutal Ahaw, 761, Mexico or Guatemala, southern lowlands African Art: Figure of an ancestor or deity, 1027-1209, Mali, Proto-Dogon Oceanic Art: Spirit figure, Yipwon, 19th century New Guinea Take a break at the de Young Café, where the emphasis is on local and seasonal ingredients. The de Young Museum Store sells prints, jewelry, textiles from around the world, as well as books and museum publications.

Admission tickets to the de Young include same-day general admission to the Legion of Honor in Lincoln Park (special exhibition fees not included).
