6 Fun Things to Do This Summer in New York City
The best ways to spend summer in NYC!
Visiting New York City during the summer months? We’ve put together a list of fun things for you to do in the sunshine…

On average, New York City can reach temperatures of up to 29°C in the summer months, giving visitors the opportunity to enjoy exploring the city in the sunshine. From visiting New York’s top attractions like the Statue of Liberty and the Empire State Building to unique outdoor events, we’ve put together a list that might just give you a few ideas for your visit…

1. Ride through Central Park

Central Park Bike Ride

Central Park is one of New York’s most famous attractions, spanning an incredible 843 acres! Of course, that’s a long way to explore on foot, so we’d recommend renting a bike. This is a fun way to get around and see the park’s highlights.

As well as the lush greenery and stunning floral displays, there’s lots of exciting attractions to see including iconic statues like Alice in Wonderland, Strawberry Fields- the memorial for Beatles legend John Lennon, Central Park Zoo and much more. Central Park has featured in countless movies and TV programmes over the years, so if you’re a movie buff, don’t miss out on the chance to see the filming locations up close. If you're not sure where to start you can book a guided tour.

2. Watch an outdoor movie

Each summer, Central Park presents the Central Park Film Festival- an outdoor cinema series, screening some of the most popular films of all time. What’s even better, is that they are completely free to attend! The films often feature a New York theme, with last year’s line-up including The Great Gatsby, The Godfather and Saturday Night Fever.

The films and dates for this year’s event are yet to be announced, but you can expect the festival to begin in late August.

3. Get an ice cream (not just any ice cream!)

New York City is famous for its incredible food and extreme eats, with so many amazing restaurants to choose from. We all know that when the sun is shining, there’s nothing better than a refreshing ice cream and NYC has some pretty impressive offerings that anyone with a serious sweet tooth will love! If you want to treat yourself to a totally Instagram-worthy ice cream, head to Stuffed Ice Cream on 1st Avenue to try one of their incredible ice cream bouquets. You can choose either 7 or 21 scoops- because one is never enough!

You can also curb your ice cream craving at Taiyaki. We love the unicorn-inspired ice cream served in one of their famous fish-shaped cones. You can choose from unique flavours like white chocolate lavender, black sesame and much more.

4. Visit a rooftop bar

New York Rooftop Bar

Once you’ve had something nice to eat, it’s time to find something to drink. With so many towering skyscrapers and iconic landmarks, New York City’s skyline is spectacular. So why not combine your sightseeing with a cocktail (or two!) at one of the city’s rooftop bars? These are the perfect place to relax in the sunshine. There are plenty of rooftop bars to choose from, but 230 Fifth has to be one of our favourites. This has the largest rooftop garden in New York, with picture perfect views of the Empire State Building. If you’re looking for drinks with a view, you can’t beat this. Make sure you pay a visit to the Empire State Building afterwards to tick the city’s most famous landmark off your bucket list.

Don't worry if you're visiting in winter either. During the colder months, you'll find inflatable igloos with heaters, so you can enjoy a rooftop drink all year round.

5. Relax on the beach

If you want to escape the hustle and bustle of the city, head to Coney Island for a day of fun in the sun. During the summer, this is a popular spot for tourists and locals alike who want to laze the day away on the sandy beach. If relaxing on the beach wasn’t enough, there’s plenty to keep you entertained throughout the day. Luna Park has lots of exciting rides that kids and big kids will love, and the huge Wonder Wheel is not to be missed. Once you’ve worked up an appetite, head to Nathan’s Famous for a classic New York hot dog.

6. Set sail on a sightseeing cruise

Anyone visiting New York City is sure to have a big list of things they want to see. The great thing about the New York Landmarks Cruise, is that you can see all of the ‘best bits’ in one go. Get your sightseeing done as you sit back and relax on deck, taking in the incredible views. Make sure you’ve got your camera at the ready, as there’s lots to see. Look out for the Brooklyn Bridge and Lady Liberty along the way. You’ll sail within 100-feet of the iconic statue, giving you the chance to get the perfect picture.
