A holiday to New York City will most likely include lots of sightseeing and visits to the city’s top attractions. In between seeing the most popular tourist spots, we think it’s important that you sample one of NYC’s most loved snacks. If you’re not sure where to start, check out our pick of the top 5 burger joints in the city…
The Spotted Pig restaurant is so popular that you’ll have to book in advance (or be prepared to wait!) if you want to get a table. It’s definitely worth it though, as the burger here is one of the best in the city! Sandwiched between a chargrilled bun, the juicy burger is topped with mouth-watering Roquefort cheese and served with shoestring fries on the side. There’s also a selection of refreshing cocktails on offer, as well as a variety of beer and wine. The restaurant is co-owned by Jay-Z and Bono amongst others, and is well known for being a bit of a celebrity hangout, so keep your eyes peeled if you visit.
2. Black Tap
If you’re looking for something a bit different, a visit to Black Tap is a must! This quirky restaurant has colourful graffiti-style paintings covering the walls, great music and even better food. There’s often long queues to get in, so we’d recommend arriving near opening time (11am) for an early lunch if you don’t want to wait. Not sure what to try? The All-American Burger is a traditional beef burger with lettuce, tomato, American cheese and a special sauce, The Mexico City is a spicy burger, topped with pepper jack cheese, pickled jalapenos, chipotle mayo and an onion ring, and the Pizza Burger (our favourite!) is a delicious burger covered with zesty tomato sauce, fresh mozzarella and shaved parmesan, with a bowl of 'pizza' sauce on the side.
We can’t talk about Black Tap without mention its mammoth milkshakes! The self-proclaimed “Crazy Shakes” are more like a work of art than a drink, and are covered with sweets, chocolate, pretzels, lollipops and cookies to name just a few. These definitely deserve a place on your Instagram page, so don’t leave without trying one!
3. Harlem Shake
Harlem Shake is a retro-style diner that claims to serve “burgers, shakes and good times”. So, if you like the sound of that, make sure you give it a try during your visit. We love the Hot Mess burger, which is a classic beef or turkey patty griddled to perfection and topped with American cheese, pickled cherry peppers, bacon relish and smoky chipotle mayo! The Classic is a great choice if you want to play it safe, made up of not just one, but two succulent beef patties with cheese sandwiched in between, topped with pickles, onions and special sauce. It’s only $7 too, making Harlem Shake a great value burger joint. Quench your thirst with a soda float or a delicious milkshake- we’d recommend the Red Velvet shake.
4. Unami Burger
Unami originally started out in Los Angeles, and has since spread to Florida, California, Las Vegas, Japan and New York City. Locals were so excited for the arrival of this new burger joint in NYC, that when it first opened in Manhattan, there was a 3-hour wait to get inside! Don’t worry, you won’t have to wait as long to get in now, although it is still extremely popular. The term “Unami” was originally coined by the Japanese, and is the powerful force behind many of our food cravings. The restaurant won’t give away any of their recipe secrets, but they do say that they “analyse ingredients and their flavour profiles to ultimately achieve this sought-after taste”.
Our favourites are the Truffle Burger-a mouth-watering creation stuffed with truffle cheese, truffle aioli and truffle glaze, the Unami Burger- parmesan frico, shiitake mushrooms, roasted tomatoes, caramelised onions and Unami special ketchup, and the Manly Burger- a juicy beef patty topped with house-beer cheddar cheese, bacon, smoked-salt onion strings, ketchup and mustard spread…delicious!
5. Joe Jr
Joe Jr has been serving tasty burgers since the 1970’s and is a no-nonsense New York Diner. You’re guaranteed a great burger here, with some of the Joe Jr fans proclaiming that they serve “the best hamburgers on earth”. The fresh burgers are delivered daily, before being griddled, topped with American cheese, lettuce, onions, and tomato, and served in a white, fluffy bun. It might sound simple, but we’re sure it will make it onto your ‘best burgers’ list. Jo Jr serves around 100 burgers a day, so join the rest of the crowd, pull up a stool and tuck in!
