Universal’s third park is set to welcome guests with a grand opening on 25th May. The stunning tropical oasis will offer guests an experience like no other, combining the exciting thrills you can find at Universal’s other theme parks, with luxurious relaxation experiences. There will be no waiting around in queues thanks to the TapuTapu wearable (more about that later) and no carrying rafts and floats around all day, giving you the chance to fully enjoy the park and become immersed into this incredible world.
Those who have been eagerly waiting to find out more exciting details, will be pleased to hear that yesterday, Universal shared the story that inspired this amazing new park. Universal revealed that whenever they create a new ride or land at one of their parks, they first think of a captivating story to go with it, and the story of Volcano Bay is pretty extraordinary!
It all began with Krakatau, a fiery god who dominated the entire land. His wrath and fury was strong, but he couldn’t contain the adventurous spirit of his daughter Tai Nui. When she fell in love with a native youth named Kala, her protective father erupted with rage and banished Kala to the sky forever, where he became the moon. Tai Nui was overcome with grief and as her tears flowed, they became the sea.
Her father soon realised that he had hurt his daughter and destroyed her happiness. After seeing the error of his ways, he was determined to reunite the young lovers and restore his daughter’s happiness. He reached into the earth and pulled it towards the sky, creating the towering volcano of Volcano Bay. Krakatau trapped the remains of his anger and jealousy inside the volcano in the form of the fire spirit Vol. The 200-foot-tall volcano is now the centrepiece of the park, with cascading water rushing down the sides during the day and red bubbling lava erupting at night. If you’re brave enough to venture deep inside, you might just find Vol!
When you arrive at the park, you’ll be greeted by the Waturi people who inhabit Volcano Bay. They will welcome you as a part of their family, ready to share their carefree way of life. The Waturi legend tells of how they came to find Volcano Bay with the help of a gold fish named Kanuku. The Waturi people travelled across the ocean in outrigger canoes, searching for a new home, but the legend proclaimed that they would only be able to find it with the help of the mystical fish.
Their voyages took them to the far corners of the South Pacific in search of Kanuku to no avail. They stopped at Bali, Tahiti and Easter Island, embracing the customs, traditions, music and art of the people they encountered along the way. They continued their search, until they came to the very edge of the world, where they found Kanuku swimming and playing in the waves. Immediately Kanuku began to guide them towards Volcano Bay. When they arrived, the Waturi people knew that this tropical paradise was destined to be their home.
Now, back to the TapuTapu. If you haven’t already heard about it, the TapuTapu is an interactive wristband that comes in a variety of colours and has a range of special features. Each guest will be given a TapuTapu wearable upon arrival that will allow you to say goodbye to theme park queues for good! With just a simple tap, you’ll be able to virtually wait in line for the park’s most popular water slides, and continue exploring the rest of the park until the TapuTapu alerts you that it’s time to make your way back to the ride.
This will save you so much time, and takes away the most frustrating part of visiting a theme park- waiting in long queues to get on the rides. That’s not all though, the TapuTapu will be able to trigger a range of special effects throughout the park. With just one tap, you’ll be able to do things like shoot water cannons at other guests and illuminate secret messages on the walls of the hidden caves!
