Flamboyant, colourful and full of life, Universal’s annual Mardi Gras festival is without a doubt one of the biggest events of the year, and you really won’t want to miss it! The lively event is so popular that this year, the celebrations will last even longer, running from 4th February 2017- 24th March. That’s an incredible 49 nights of fun! Typically associated with New Orleans, Mardi Gras is a vibrant carnival that invites party goers to dress up in elaborate costumes with feathers, sequins and fancy face masks. If you want to experience Mardi Gras for yourself, Universal Studios Florida really knows how to throw a good party!
The standout event during the festivities is the Mardi Gras parade which takes place every night. Get your family and friends together and line the streets in time to witness the extravagant floats make their way through the park. Look out for the talented dancers, street performers and stilt walkers too. Take part in a Mardi Gras tradition as you try to catch beads and doubloons that are thrown into the crowd!
The dazzling floats have been designed by Kern Studios who are famous for creating extraordinary Mardi Gras floats for over 60 years in New Orleans. Make sure you’ve got your camera handy, as you’ll want to relive this magical parade over and over again. You might like to know that little ones can get the perfect view from their own private viewing area in front of the Brown Derby Hat Shop.
As well as the spectacular parade, there will also be a number of live concerts, where some of the biggest rock, pop and R&B acts will take to the stage. This year’s performers have not yet been announced, but if you’re planning to visit the park during Mardi Gras, be sure to check the line-up beforehand. You never know, you could end the night singing along with one of your favourite artists! Last year's performers included Diana Ross, Kool & the gang, Fall Out Boy and Jessie J. At the French Quarter Courtyard, you can enjoy live music each night from authentic Blues and Zydeco bands from Louisiana.
Whatever you do, don’t miss the mouth-watering festival food! Serving up tasty Cajun cuisine, savour dishes like Jambalaya, Creole Gumbo, Andouille Sausage, and Red Beans & Rice to name just a few. The sweet Beignets (light, melt in the mouth doughnut-like treats) are the perfect way to finish your meal.
