While a holiday in Orlando can often prove quite expensive, there are plenty of ways you can save money, or spend none at all by making the most of fantastic free activities! There’s so much to do that will cost you nothing at all, and these things are perfect for days off in-between exploring the incredible theme parks. Take a look at our pick of the best things to do in Orlando for free…
Visit Wekiwa Springs:
Wekiwa Springs is the perfect place for a picnic on a sunny Orlando day. Spend your day outside of the theme parks, exploring the incredible 7,000-acre State Park and get closer to nature. Take in the stunning scenery, lush landscapes and the great variety of wildlife roaming the park. If you fancy a swim, jump straight into the warm 72-degree springs, or if you’re looking for a bit more adventure, there are plenty of activities to do. Bring along your fishing gear, ride your bike, go snorkelling or attempt a 13.5-mile hiking trail.
Go for a swim:
If you’re staying in a hotel with a pool, make sure you make the most of it. The pools at the Disney hotels all have great themes that both children and adults will love. Make swimming even more fun as you float along a lazy river, race down waterslides, paddle beside a bubbling volcano and swim in a giant piano or bowling pin shaped pool! The poolside is the ideal place to unwind when you’re not visiting the local theme parks, and you don’t even have to leave your hotel to do so. Spend the day relaxing on a sun lounger, and make use of the hotel hot tub.
Tour the Disney hotels:
Exploring a range of hotels probably doesn’t come to mind when you think of things to do at Walt Disney World, but at the Disney hotels there’s just so much to see! Most of the hotels offer complimentary guided tours where you can see the incredible architecture up close, and learn all about the hotel’s secrets. At the Animal Kingdom Lodge, you can sample authentic African cuisine and admire the beautiful animals that call this place home, during your tour. Disney’s Art of Animation resort offers workshops run by talented art teachers, where children can learn how to draw their favourite Disney characters. You might even get the chance to listen to some live music as you walk through the grand hotel lobbies. Make sure you’ve got your camera as there will be plenty of photo opportunities beside enormous 40-foot tall Dalmatians and a 35-foot tall Buzz Lightyear!
Hang out with Chip 'n' Dale:
Disney’s Fort Wilderness hosts a nightly sing-a-long session around the campfire with 2 very special guests of honour…Chip ‘n’ Dale! Indulge in the tastiest campfire treat of all; a gooey roasted marshmallow drizzled with melted chocolate and sandwiched between 2 crumbly Graham crackers! Roast the marshmallows for yourself as you sit alongside the friendly characters and sing along to classic Disney songs with music provided by a guitar playing cowboy. After singing your heart out, the fun continues with an outdoor Disney movie screening! Wrap up warm with blankets and settle down to watch the movie under the stars. You’ll have plenty of time to take photos and get autographs from the famous duo to round of your evening, making it a truly unforgettable experience.
Relax on the beach:
There are some breath-taking beaches in Florida that are definitely worth a visit. Venture 2-hours outside of Orlando and experience a day at the iconic Clearwater Beach. The warm turquoise water and pure white sand invite you to spend a day lazing on a beach towel with an ice cream in hand! In the evening the beach awakens with the fun filled ‘Sunsets at Pier 60’ festival. Watch talented street performers capture the crowd’s attention and attempt daring tricks like fire breathing and stilt walking. Visit Sunset Cinema, a free outdoor movie theatre showing family friendly films like Despicable Me, Finding Nemo and Jurassic World. You’ll also be able to browse a variety of handcrafted goods made locally.
Explore the entertainment complexes:
The magical sight of the illuminated BoardWalk at night is definitely worth seeing. Wander along the charming promenade and admire the impressive architecture and vibrant buildings.
