Over the weekend at the D23 Expo Disney announced several new attractions that would soon be coming to their parks. From an action-packed Guardians of the Galaxy-inspired ride to a new Star Wars Hotel, Toy Story Land and much more, there’s been plenty to get excited about. Something we’re really looking forward to though, is a BRAND NEW ride called Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway. This incredible new attraction will be opening at Disney’s Hollywood Studios and will be the FIRST EVER Mickey-themed ride-through attraction!
On Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway, you’ll be able to step through the movie screen and join your favourite characters for an exciting adventure. The attraction puts you into the colourful world of a Mickey Mouse cartoon short. Disney have promised that it will be “wacky and unpredictable” with plenty of twists, turns and surprises along the way. You’ll become the star of the show and when we say anything could happen, we really do mean anything!
The attraction is inspired by the Mickey Mouse shorts shown on the Disney Channel and the creative team who work on the shorts will all be involved with the planning and production of this new ride. There will be dazzling visual effects and “mind-boggling transformations” that happen right before your eyes. The ride will also feature a new, unique experience which Disney are calling “2 ½ D”. Never heard of it? Well, 2 ½ D means there are no glasses required. Instead, Walt Disney Imagineers are working hard to invent new technologies that will “turn the flat world of a colourful cartoon short into a dimensional display of amazingness.”
Disney Imagineer Kevin Rafferty explained that the attraction won’t be something small, but instead a game-changer for Walt Disney World! He also described the project as “one of the boldest…most impossible things I’ve ever worked on in almost 40 years of being an Imagineer”. Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway is really going to push the boundaries, offering something you’ve never experienced before!
The new attraction will be located where the Chinese Theatre currently is at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. This means that the Great Movie Ride will be closing (13th August) to make room for it. While we’ll be sad to see it go, we’re excited to see something new at the park and finally be able to experience a Mickey Mouse ride!
