Default National Pi Day - And National Pie Championships!

Here's a bit of fun, both today and next month. And, somehow, we find ourselves as 'judges' for the National Pie Championships next month....!!

ORLANDO (March 13, 2019) - Like the mathematical constant named for the same-sounding Greek letter, pie is a constant around the globe, a sweet or savory dish that complements any meal, whether it's apple, pumpkin, pecan, mince, blueberry, cherry, sweet potato, peach or countless more.

On March 14, widely recognized as Pi Day, the American Pie CouncilŽ (APC) urges everyone to celebrate with a slice of their favorite pie, either as the delicious conclusion to a perfect meal or a decadent, "just because" indulgence. With millions of pies baked, sold and consumed every year, Pi Day offers the perfect day to pause and enjoy what has come to be considered "the most traditional American dessert."

    Why Pi Day?
Ancient civilizations determined the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter is approximately 3.14159, a mathematical constant represented by the Greek letter  (pi) since the mid-18th century.

The first large-scale celebration of Pi Day took place March 14, 1988, in San Francisco, noting the similarity of the date (3/14) to the first three digits of the number.

In 2009, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a non-binding resolution recognizing March 14 as National Pi Day, and, on March 14, fans can share their love of pie on social media with the hashtag #PiDay.

Meanwhile, the countdown continues for the country's next major pie milestone - the 25th APC National Pie Championships in Orlando, a three-day competition set to identify the best pies created by amateur, professional and commercial bakers. The silver anniversary event is set for April 11-13, 2019, at Renaissance Orlando at SeaWorldŽ.

During the 2018 championships, bakers from the U.S. and Canada submitted hundreds of pies sampled by more than 200 judges in order to pick the best in many different flavor categories.

"Every day is great for pie," said Linda Hoskins, executive director of the American Pie Council, "but Pi Day is the perfect occasion to celebrate, whether it's grandma's baked-from-scratch masterpiece or the proud product of your local bakery or grocery store."

As Susan says, we're not quite sure how this happened, but we will be judging at the Championships this week, taking place at the fab Renaissance Orlando Resort from Apr 11-13. We will be judging on the 12th (Commercial Day), and, while it isn't open to the general public that day, there IS a special event (that's free to enjoy) on Saturday the 13th.

    Here are the details:

    Saturday, April 13
    4 p.m. to approx. 7 p.m.
    SeaWorld Orlando Renaissance
Pie Party including free slices of pie, cash bar and fun interactive pie events like the Iron Pie Chef, apron fashion show, culminating in the announcement of the 2019 APC National Pie Championships amateur and professional winners.
Free, open to the public. No RSVP necessary.
