Default Norweigen to cut long haul travel

A report on the BBC website, although never the most acurate, states that Norweigen air has cut another 1100 jobs at Gatwick and a total of over 2100 worlwide and all it's long haul flights to concentrate on short haul European only. It is great that the airline is still actually in business but another sad day with job losses. Hopefully in the years to come the company can get it's self settled and start to grow again.

TravelMole has also confirmed this, with the loss of the jobs as mentioned. It probably isn't surprising as Norwegian was one of the most vulnerable airlines to a prolonged shutdown, but it is still really sad to see this happening, and the loss of one of the main UK-Florida carriers

An unfortunate sign of the times. Doesn't bode well for other transatlantic airlines either.

From today's TravelMole. Not sure how useful Unite's contribution at this point in time is.

Poor decisions contributed to Norwegian long-haul demise, says union

Union officials have said poor business decisions before the pandemic contributed to the demise of Norwegian's long-haul operation after insisting staff must be the 'first priority' for the airline.

Unite described the collapse of Norwegian's UK company, with the loss of 1100 Gatwick jobs, as 'another devastating blow' for the industry.

While not specifying what those 'poor decisions' were, Unite said Covid alone was not responsible for the airline's turmoil.

"While coronavirus travel restrictions are certainly the reason for Norwegian Air's difficulties, poor business decisions in the years preceding the pandemic have not helped," Unite regional manger Jamie Major said. "The airline's staff should not be made to shoulder the burden of Norwegian Air's UK insolvency and must be the first priority during the administration process."

Unite again called on the government to provide support for the ailing aviation sector

"For nearly a year, as thousands upon thousands of aviation jobs have been decimated by Covid-19, Unite has warned ministers that the kind of support for the industry seen in competitor nations is desperately needed here," Major said. "It is now absolutely imperative that government steps in with a stabilisation and recovery plan to prevent even more aviation jobs and businesses going to the wall."

Unite said it is setting up emergency measures to support staff.

Norwegian yesterday confirmed it was abandoning its long-haul network to focus on short-haul routes in a bid to become a 'robust' business able to attract investors.

It is truly amazing how other countries can find support for their airports and aviation industries, and EasyJet managed to get its hand in the UK coffers, but a lot of other companies (especially the airports) stand to go bust. I think Unite definitely has a point, albeit it's a bit late in the game to be saying 'I told you so.' Hopefully this is the last of the big 'airline fails' stories for this pandemic, and things can start to turn around from here, albeit we're probably still looking at 3 more months of inactivity on this front

Very sad news indeed, we had nothing but great service from them each time we flew.

Norwegian were already struggling financially before covid, so it really isn't surprising they have gone under but so sad for all their staff.
7 Trips to Florida, Christmas in LA, Disneyland Paris twice and odd days here and there.
All my trip reports are now HERE.
