First ever net-zero transatlantic flight to take off next year

The first net-zero transatlantic flight is expected to take off in 2023.

A demonstration flight will be operated by 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

It will be powered by materials from household waste or used cooking oil.

It offers emissions savings of over 70% compared to conventional jet fuel

“It’s great news for passengers who will be able to visit the Big Apple without increasing damaging greenhouse gas emissions,” said UK Transport Secretary Grant Shapps during a visit to the US.

“It’s crucial that we place sustainability at the heart of the aviation industry’s recovery.”

The UK government is funding SAF development with £180m over the next three years.

“UK airlines strongly support the development of a SAF industry, which will play a vital role in helping our sector deliver net zero emissions by 2050,” said Tim Alderslade, CEO of Airlines UK.

The transport ministry says the sustainable fuel sector could support up to 5,200 jobs in the UK.
