What: Nothing tests your friendship more than when you’re locked in a room, the clock is ticking and you need to work together to solve clues in order to escape, before you’re locked inside forever. New York is home to a few of these popular puzzle-solving adventures, so there are a few options to choose from. Avoid being eaten by the zombie (whose chain seems to get longer every 5 minutes) in Room Escape Adventures’ experience; watch out for the doctor in Mission Escapes’ Hydeout; or everyone’s worst nightmare – being stuck at work for potential eternity in Escape the Room’s Office! Just don’t have a fall out…
3. Have a Laugh!
What: Many people list ‘Having a laugh with my mates’ as one of their top interests on dating profiles or job applications. With some of the best Comedy Clubs in America to offer, New York is the place to do exactly that! If you can’t pick a spot, then we suggest Comedy Cellar, whose stage is regularly home to familiar faces, including Chris Rock, Ray Romano, Wanda Sykes and the late, great Robin Williams. With two locations to choose from, you’re in for a fantastic night of the best of New York’s comic talent.
Where: Comedy Cellar, 117 MacDougal Street, between W 3rd St and Minetta Lane
4. Go on Tour
The ferry and bus sightseeing tours in New York are great for getting your tourist fix, but if you and your friends are looking for a tour with a little twist, then you really are spoilt for choice. The Woodbury Common Shopping Tour
is perfect for anyone who needs to top up their wardrobe, or if the silver screen is more your thing, there’s the Central Park Walking Tour of TV & Movie Sites, which explores places you may recognize from shows like Sex and the City, Friends and classic movies, such as Ghostbusters. There are food tours for the hungry, biking tours for the athletes and ghost tours for the brave. Take your pick and explore something new in NYC.
5. Be on TV
What: …or at least be in the audience of a major US TV show. Saturday Night Live is just one of the shows recorded in New York filmed with a live audience and possibly one of the most iconic. SNL (Saturday Night Live) is the very show that launched the likes of The Blues Brothers, Kristin Wiig, Jimmy Fallon and Will Ferrell. There’s a different guest every episode and with names like Justin Timberlake, Daniel Radcliffe and Michael Bublé previously billed, who knows who you’ll see?
6. See a Show
Admittedly, there are likely to be plenty of couples enjoying a New York Broadway Show this Valentine's Day, but a Broadway show is so iconic, it musn't be missed. Surely an evening spent watching a Broadway show beats a restaurant filled with couples staring lovingly into each other’s eyes. You and your friends can choose between an impressive number of shows from the New York theatre district. For those really trying to avoid anything lovey-dovey and want something a little bit cheeky and simultaneously hilarious, then we recommend Avenue Q or The Book of Mormon. for your visit to NYC.
7. Shoot Some Hoops
What: It is always worth checking out what is happening at Madison Square Garden when you visit New York and as it happens, this Valentine’s weekend, not only can you visit one of the most famous venues in the world, but you also get to see some of NBA’s finest at the NBA All-Star Game. It’s East vs West and you’ll see the skills of major NBA stars being put to the test, including the New York Knicks’ own Carmelo Anthony.
Where: Madison Square Garden
When: You can catch the NBA All-Stars Practice on 14th Feb, but the big game itself is on Sunday 15th Feb.
8. Challenge Yourself
What: Forget the romantic candle-lit dinner; if you’re in America, you need to eat like an American! New York has some amazing restaurants, but there’s nothing quite like a food challenge and this city is full of them. For our entrée, we’re going for the 1lb sandwiches on offer at the world-famous Katz’s Deli (as featured in the movie When Harry Met Sally). Dessert is ‘The Kitchen Sink’ at Bubby’s in Lower Manhattan. This is 16 scoops of ice cream, pretzels, pecans, peanuts, chocolate chip cookie crumbs, chocolate and caramel syrup, raspberry and cherry syrup, rainbow sprinkles. Whipped cream, cherries and topped with an American flag. Then, maybe it’s back to your hotel for a bit of a lie-down.
Where: Katz Delicatessen, 205 E Houston St, New York, NY 10002, United States
Bubby's, 120 Hudson St, New York, NY 10013, United States
