How to Visit New York City on a Budget
The best ways to enjoy NYC on a budget
Planning a visit to the Big Apple? Here are some top tips for saving your dollars…

A holiday to New York City can work out quite expensive, and that’s just considering the flights and accommodation. With so many amazing things to do, the price of your trip could add up quite quickly, but don’t worry, there are plenty of ways you can save money. Believe it or not, it is actually possible to ‘do’ New York on a budget. Here are our tip tips for saving your dollars…

Pre-book attraction tickets:

Empire State Building

Whether it’s the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty or Top of the Rock, there are so many iconic landmarks to visit. Pre-booking your tickets is a great way to save money, as prices will always be higher if you buy them when you arrive. Some of our tickets (for example Empire State Building tickets) let you skip the queue, so you’ll be able to save up to 30 minutes off the wait time, giving you more time to enjoy the rest of this amazing city. You’ll even get the actual tickets before you travel! If you want to visit multiple attractions, you can save money with a multi-attraction New York pass.

Use your FREE gifts:

New York City Free Gifts

When making any New York booking with Attraction Tickets Direct, you’ll receive not just one, but two FREE gifts. What’s even better, is that both of them will save you money! The free Macy’s Savings Card will give you up to 10% off most purchases in the store, while the New York Dine 4 Less Card lets you benefit from discounts of up to 20% off the entire food bill at over 30 New York restaurants.

Make the most of the free attractions:

Central Park New York City

There are plenty of things to do in New York City that are completely free! Take a stroll through Central Park and admire the beautiful Strawberry Fields, walk the length of the Brooklyn Bridge or visit the New York City Public Library where countless movies have been filmed. A lot of museums also have certain days/hours where visits are either free or ‘pay what you wish’. By timing your visit carefully you’ll be able to save money. If it’s a nice day, we’d recommend visiting the High Line, a public park built on an old freight rail line, that’s elevated above the streets of Manhattan. It’s also worth checking if there are any special events on during your visit like the city’s world-famous seasonal parades.

Get great views of the city for just $3:

Roosevelt Island Tram

A ride on the Roosevelt Island Tram is a fun and unique way to see the city, and it only costs one swipe of your metro card- that's only $3! The aerial adventure offers panoramic views of your spectacular surroundings, so make sure you’ve got your camera. You’ll also get the chance to explore a different part of New York, when you get off at Roosevelt Island. If you’re visiting with little ones, they’ll love the exciting journey.

Walk or get the Subway:

New York City Subway

While a ride in one of the famous yellow taxis may be something you want to tick off your bucket list, it’s not worth getting taxis everywhere you go. Not only will it be expensive, but you’ll also find yourself sitting in the equally famous New York City traffic! Walking is a great way to get to know the city, plus the streets and avenues are easy to navigate. The subway costs around $3 per ride, which makes it much more affordable. You can also purchase a 7-day metro card (approx. $31) that allows you to travel on both the subway and buses as many times as you like.

Save money on your meals (and enjoy happy hour!):

New York City Pizza

We’re sure you’ll want to treat yourself to a few nice meals during your holiday, but you don’t have to spend a lot of money every time you eat. Some of the city’s most popular snacks happen to be the cheapest, and these are ideal for a quick bite on the go. For lunch, indulge in a traditional hot dog or an enormous slice of pizza for as little as $1! Drinking in the city can be expensive too, so it’s a good idea to make the most of happy hour. There are so many bars to choose from with deals that are guaranteed to save you money. For the beer lovers, the Brooklyn Brewery offers free tours with complimentary samples.

Watch a show for free:

While tickets to a Broadway show can be quite expensive, it’s definitely something you should consider if you love going to the theatre, as the dazzling Broadway productions really are impressive. If you’ve got a show in mind, we’d recommend pre-booking your tickets to save money. If that’s not in your budget though, you could try something a bit different, and watch a live TV show taping completely free of charge! Be a part of the audience and watch programmes like The Tonight Show (starring Jimmy Fallon) and Saturday Night Live being filmed. You might even see a few celebrity guests. There are places in the city that host free stand-up comedy shows too, and in the summer, there are several free concerts held in Central Park.
