The first ‘land’ to open within the Wizarding World was Hogsmeade at Universal’s Islands of Adventure, where you can enjoy incredible attractions like the Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey ride, Dragon Challenge and Flight of the Hippograff, a family-friendly rollercoaster. Beyond the rides though, guests are also treated to the sight of the incredible Hogwarts Castle and Hogsmeade Village, which of course includes its own Three Broomsticks pub!
After seeing how much delight the fans and park visitors took in the new Wizarding World of Harry Potter, it was quickly decided that expansion was necessary to accommodate all these Potterhead guests! So, in 2014, the Diagon Alley expansion to the Wizarding World opened its magical doors to guests visiting Universal Studios Florida. Scarcely a month later, more than 1 million passengers had boarded the magical Hogwarts Express which takes guests between the 2 parks! The Diagon Alley expansion includes Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts as well as plenty of extra food, drinks and souvenir attractions that you really can’t miss on your visit.
So, with park numbers and interest in the Harry Potter franchise seemingly rising incessantly, it wasn’t long before rumours started to spark about the next Wizarding World expansion. The first clue can be found in 2 seemingly innocuous red telephone boxes in the London Embankment area of Diagon Alley. These post boxes were shipped all the way from the UK to the park, so they’re clearly much more important than they might initially seem. In fact, they’re one of the biggest hints that the next expansion of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter (if there is one) could be the opening of the Ministry of Magic.
Currently, if you go inside one of these telephone boxes and dial “6-2-4-4-2” (which spells MAGIC on the phone!) you’ll be met with an automated message saying The Ministry of Magic is not open on that day. Does this mean that it might be open one day? Who knows! But Alan Gilmore, art director for Universal’s Wizarding World of Harry Potter and many of the Harry Potter films set tongues wagging when he not only didn’t deny that this was Universal’s plan but instead said: "It may be in the future. Who knows?"
How exciting would that be? A whole site devoted to the workings of the Ministry of Magic, the Wizarding World’s UK governing body and also the site of one of the most epic duels in Harry Potter history. We can definitely see potential for Universal to develop some incredible rides and attractions based upon the scenes that take place in the Ministry: there’s the magical floo powder journeys which transport wizards from all over the world into the Ministry’s great hall, the Hall of Prophecies, where Harry and friends encounter some of their most dangerous and deadly scenes in the film and, of course, the battle between Dumbledore and Lord Voldemort in the huge atrium.
We have to stress that this is a light-hearted rumour update and there’s no firm plans or announcements from Universal as of yet! However with the incredible detailing involved in the making of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, we’re sure that whatever expansion, if any, Universal decide to undertake will be a really successful addition to the park!
To check out the two amazing areas that already make up The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, make sure you get the 2-park hopper ticket for Universal Orlando so you can experience both sides!
