From 6am on 22 May until 6am on 23 May, Magic Kingdom will host a slew of special events in honour of summer, starting with a 6am welcome from Princess Anna, Queen Elsa, the loveable snowman Olaf, and Kristoff from the hit movie Frozen, followed by a special park-opening ceremony. The park’s Magic Cam (webcam) will capture some of the festivities for those not able to attend, so keep watch!
The Festival of Fantasy parade will run twice (at noon and 3pm) during the 24 hour event, as will the night-time Main Street Electrical Parade (11pm and 1am). Move It! Shake It! Dance and Play It! Street Party makes its way through the park at 9.30am and 5.40pm, while a DJ keeps the party going in Tomorrowland, with the Club Chill party zone from 4pm until 11pm. Disney Channel and Disney XD characters will join the celebration, so have cameras at the ready. Favourite classic characters will also show up at late-night dance parties in Frontierland and the Castle Hub—wearing their pyjamas (you’ll be glad you have your camera poised for those rare pictures)!
That same day (22 May) also sees the debut of Teen Beach Movie 2 beach party at Disney’s water park, Typhoon Lagoon. Biker and surfer characters inspired by the movie lead dance parties at select times throughout the day, rockin’ to 1960s hit songs and encouraging guests to join in the fun. The beach party also features sand relays, hula-hoop contests and beach ball and water balloon tossing. Sounds strenuous? Don’t worry; the wave pool is nearby for a quick cool-down. Still not your thing? Grab a cold beverage and a sun lounger and enjoy the party as a spectator. Totally not your scene? It’s fairly localised, so snag a lounger near the back of the park and relax the day away in blissful quiet (or as quiet as the park gets!). The Teen Beach party runs from 22 May through 5 July.
The highlight of the Coolest Summer Ever, though, is undoubtedly Frozen Summer Fun LIVE, making a grand return after last summer’s popularity. Princess Anna, Queen Elsa, Kristoff and Olaf (who doesn’t “do whatever snowmen do in summer”) bring the story of Frozen to Disney’s Hollywood Studios from 15 June through 7 September with meet-and-greets, a special sing-along, and their very own parade.
Frozen Royal Welcome parades down Hollywood Boulevard at 10.30am daily with a colourful cavalcade of “ice skaters”, ice cutters, and, of course, the stars of the movie. Princess Anna and Queen Elsa perform a short sing-along after the parade, but it’s just a warm-up for your vocal cords before the main show of For the First Time in Forever: A Frozen Sing-Along Celebration. Hosted by two comical commoners, this stage show takes place in the former American Idol theatre several times daily, and the comic duo’s banter is so funny even those who aren’t dedicated Frozen fans will get a laugh or three out of it. But the real goal here is to sing your heart out to popular tunes from the movie, including a grand finale featuring Princess Anna and Queen Elsa (and the audience) singing Let It Go.
Stay on for a special themed dance party and the Frozen Fireworks once the sun goes down. The fireworks take place over the Chinese Theater, but if it gets too crowded there you’ll find good out-of-the-way viewing on Streets of America.
For those who take their Frozen experiences seriously, there is a Frozen Summer Fun Premium Package available which gives guests a VIP viewing section with light refreshments for the parade, up-front seating at the sing-along, and a dedicated viewing area with dessert party (with themed sweet treats plus alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages) during the fireworks. The price tag may be a bit chilling, but it’s the ultimate fans’ chance for a special royal wave from Anna and Elsa. Take note, the package is not available on 4 or 15 July.
Can’t drop an additional $110 for VIP treatment for a family of 4? Don’t worry. Excellent viewing areas for the parade are readily available (seek out your spot early for the best vantage point) and there isn’t really a bad seat in the house for the sing-along. What about the cupcakes and other themed treats? Find them at several dining locations around the park.
Not officially part of The Coolest Summer Ever, but overlapping with it is the wildly popular annual event Star Wars Weekends, running 15 May through 14 June at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. If you’ve ever been, we don’t need to say any more. If you haven’t, this is one of the coolest events in the (Disney) World, if not the galaxy. You’ll find elaborate meet-and-greet opportunities all around the Star Tours area of the park and Streets of America, with utterly convincing characters from the Star Wars movie series. We’ve attended on several weekends just for the sake of wandering around enjoying the immense make-up and costuming creativity the event is well-known for.
Nearly as much fun as seeing the Star Wars characters is watching the procession of guests dressed in their fantasy finest. It’s not unheard of to see a dozen Princess Leias and a host of Jedi Masters wandering around on any given weekend, so don’t hesitate to join in and express your Disney “Star Wars” side!
With special guest stars attending each weekend (see the Interstellar Celebrity Appearances list here) for meet-and-greets and autograph sessions (you MUST have a special Autograph FastPass to get an autograph; see Disney FASTPASS Ticket Required for Celebrity Autographs on the link above), a brilliant Legends of the Force parade, and fan favourite Q&A session Stars of the Saga, this is one event you won’t want to miss. Say “hello” if you see us, because we’ll be there (and don’t forget to try a yummy Darth Vader cupcake)!
It's not too late to join in the fun! Book now and you could be singing along with Elsa and Olaf's to your favourite Frozen tunes in just a few weeks!
