Whether you’re a fully fledged vegan, or are simply interested in consuming a more plant-based diet, you will be pleased to hear that ALL major quick and table service restaurants will be serving up plant-based options at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida and Disneyland Resort California.
Alongside the additional menu items, a new plant-based icon will be featured on the Disney dining menus, meaning guests with dietary requirements will easily be able to see which dishes are suitable for them.
What is a plant-based diet?
A plant-based diet is a diet which consists mostly of foods derived from - you guessed it - plants. These can be vegetables, grains, nuts, seeds, legumes and fruits, with no animal products. It’s often followed by vegans, a rising dietary trend, however it is also increasingly being adopted by those who consider themselves ‘flexitarian’, i.e. they still consume animal products and non-plant products, but want to be more conscious of their food choices and practice part of this healthier diet.
Does this mean the dishes don’t taste as nice?
Of course not! While we may turn to things like dairy and meat to add more flavour to our dishes, this need not always be the case. The new dishes at the Disney Parks prove that enjoying plant-based food is exciting and tasty, and as they write on the Disney Park blog, “We’re always looking for ways to bring more flavor, innovation, and creativity to the Disney dining experience - and guest feedback is first on the menu when we evolve our menus and develop new dishes.”
What plant-based dishes will I be able to eat at the Disney Parks?
Disney already has an impressive range of vegetarian and vegan options at its parks, however this new announcement is still welcome news for anyone who follows a plant-based diet. The expanded offerings means that guests will have more choice, and an overall more enjoyable dining experience.
Disney has said that a range of cuisines will feature in this new plant-based category, including “comfort-food and classics and exciting new dishes for the adventurer in all of us”. That means there’s bound to be something to delight your taste buds during your next Disney visit.
Let’s have a look at some of the new and familiar plant-based dishes:
Steamed Asian Dumplings from Le Cellier at Epcot - Delicious plant-based meat dumplings, served with bok choy, Chinese long beans, red peppers and radish in a fragrant Asian broth.
Shiriki Noodle Salad from Jungle Navigation Co. LTD Skipper Canteen at Magic Kingdom Park - A refreshing salad, made with noodles, edamame beans, mushrooms, green mango and cucumber, tossed in a sweet chili sauce.
Felucian Garden Spread from Docking Bay 7 Food & Cargo at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge (Disney’s Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Park at Disneyland Resort California) - This spread is made with plant-based ‘kefta’, herb hummus, tomato-cucumber relish and pita.
Chili-Spiced Crispy Fried Tofu Bowl from Satu’li Canteen at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park - Have a taste of Pandora with crispy tofu and seasoned chili-spice, all topped with a crunchy vegetable slaw, boba balls, and your choice of base and sauce.
Plant-Based Cashew Cheesecake from California Grill at Disney’s Contemporary Resort - Disney hasn't forgotten about dessert, don’t worry! This is just of the many plant-based desserts which will be available at Walt Disney World Resort.
When will I be able to taste it all?
If you’re visiting Walt Disney World Resort, the plant-based menu icon has aready launched and new food options have already been introduced, starting on October 1 at quick service locations, and October 3 at table service locations. More than 400 snacks and treats are available for you to enjoy, so be prepared to get stuck in.
Disneyland Resort California will be rolling out the plant-based menu icon and food options in spring 2020, so if you’re more of a Disneyland fan, you don't have long to wait either.
Disney are also offering this delicious plant-based cuisine in other locations, including DisneylandⓇ Paris. Enjoy European-inspired dishes like Risotto-style Spelt with Mushrooms, at the resort. Yum!
The announcement is already proving popular, with lots of fans commenting on the Disney Park Blog post, thanking Disney Parks for including more dishes and considering guests’ dietary needs.
