With lots of new developments already in motion and planned for Universal Studios in recent/future years, from the devoted Harry Potter and Springfield areas to the Volcano Bay waterpark, King Kong and Fast and Furious rides, it seems the time is right for this particular ride to take a bow and make way for something new.
The walk-through ride climaxes with a simulated tornado (complete with a lovable flying cow) and features video introductions and recordings throughout by the film’s stars, Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton. The movie was released in 1996 (followed by the ride in 1998), so if you’re wondering if it might be getting a little dated now, just take a look at Bill Paxton’s rugged aging chops…
What’s exactly replacing this iconic staple of Universal Parks, you ask? Well, in 2017, you get to Race Through New York with Jimmy Fallon! Which Fallon describes as a 3-D (maybe 4D?) ride similar to the experience in the park’s Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey. Perhaps with less dementors (but then it is New York, so who knows who you’ll run into?).
Here’s Jimmy Fallon announcing the ride on The Tonight Show:
If you haven’t ever had the opportunity to experience Twister, or perhaps if you’re feeling nostalgic, position yourself between two electric desk fans and check out this video of the ride.
