Freya, our Marketing Campaigns Executive, spent two incredible days exploring Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex! Here’s a look at her out-of-this-world adventure...
I recently spent two days exploring Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex in Florida, and it was out of this world! I arrived knowing very little about space, so this is a beginner’s-eye view of everything we got up to, with towering rockets, the KSC Explore Tour and even a live SpaceX launch at sunrise along the way!

My Key Takeaways:

  • You don't need to be a space expert to enjoy it!

  • Two days are worth it if you can spare the time

  • The KSC Explore Tour is an absolute must-do

  • Watching a live rocket launch is unforgettable. Seeing a SpaceX rocket launch into the sky at sunrise was the highlight of my trip.

  • Space Shuttle Atlantis® is a must-seE

  • There's something for everyone

  • Book popular experiences in advance where possible via the Kennedy Space Center Guide app.

Day 1: Exploring Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex

Large models of rockets towering over pathway.

We kicked off our adventure in the Rocket Garden, marvelling at the incredible rockets that helped take humans into space! It was fascinating to see how tiny the original capsules were and how spacecraft have evolved over the years. I particularly loved learning that you can join a specialist-led guided tour of the Rocket Garden at select times to discover even more about these historic vessels.

Space Shuttle Atlantis®

Next up was Space Shuttle Atlantis®, and WOW. This was absolutely incredible!

Your experience begins with a short film that draws you into the story of the Space Shuttle programme. You're so mesmerised that you almost forget there's a HUGE space shuttle waiting behind the screen. Then comes the grand reveal, and honestly, I found it quite emotional.

Before this trip, I knew very little about space, but seeing Atlantis in person truly inspired me. There's so much to explore, from interactive exhibits where you can sit in the driver's seat to the thrilling Shuttle Launch Experience, which is much faster than it looks!

Lifelong space enthusiasts and complete beginners like me will love it. This is an absolute MUST-DO.

Journey to Mars

We then headed to Journey to Mars to discover the incredible rovers exploring the Red Planet today. It was fascinating learning about Mars's ancient rivers and lakes, and how scientists are still searching for signs of life. We also learnt about Olympus Mons, a giant Martian volcano around three times the height of Mount Everest. Mind-blowing!

We finished by watching Journey to Mars: Explorers Wanted, a fun show that's particularly great for younger visitors and inspiring the next generation of space explorers.

Exploring Planet Play

Climbing frames shaped as planets in the solar system

Back outside, we were lucky enough to bump into the astronaut mascot and grab a quick photo.

Before lunch at Orbit Cafe, we popped into Planet Play, an intergalactic indoor play area for children aged 2-12. It's HUGE, with slides that project little ones into mini spaceships, planet-inspired climbing frames, interactive technology and soft play, plus mini rovers for toddlers to drive.

I was blown away by how much there was inside. It's the perfect spot for younger visitors to burn off some energy while parents take a well-earned breather!

After a delicious burger, it was time for one of the biggest highlights of our trip: the KSC Explore Tour.

The KSC Explore Tour: Getting up close to history

Freya stood in front of huge building, the Vehicle Assembly Building, with NASA sign on and huge american flag

This. Was. INCREDIBLE.

If there's one experience I'd recommend adding to your itinerary, it's the Explore Tour. We genuinely felt like VIPs as our incredibly knowledgeable guide, Ken, took us around the complex, sharing fascinating facts along the way.

There was so much to take in, from learning how enormous crawler-transporters move rockets from the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) to the launch pads, to discovering the history of the vehicles used during emergency operations.

Our first major stop was the Launch Complex 39 Gantry, where we saw a simulation of a rocket engine firing at launch and enjoyed incredible views across the complex. We then travelled between Launch Complex 39A and Launch Pad 39B to see these historic sites up close.

These launch pads have played a huge role in space exploration, including some of humanity's most significant missions.

Launch Complex 39A highlights:

  • Apollo 4, the first uncrewed test flight of the Saturn V rocket.
  • Apollo 8, the first crewed mission to orbit the Moon.
  • Apollo 11, the first crewed lunar landing.
  • STS-1, the first Space Shuttle flight.
  • STS-135, the final Space Shuttle mission, flown by Atlantis in 2011.

Launch Pad 39B highlights:

  • Apollo 10, the crewed dress rehearsal for the first lunar landing.
  • Space Shuttle missions throughout the programme.
  • Artemis I, the uncrewed lunar test flight launched in 2022.
  • Artemis II, the crewed lunar flyby mission launched in April 2026.

Knowing that so many historic missions began here makes seeing these launch pads in person all the more special. It's one thing to read about space exploration, but it's another to stand where history happened!

Apollo/Saturn V Center

Our tour continued to the Apollo/Saturn V Center, home to an enormous restored Saturn V Moon rocket measuring an incredible 363 feet long!

The centre celebrates the Apollo lunar missions through historic artefacts, interactive exhibits and displays about humanity's journey to the Moon. One of my favourite moments was touching a real Moon rock. I honestly wasn't expecting it to feel quite like it did!

We also stopped by the Vehicle Assembly Building, and pictures genuinely do not do this place justice. It's absolutely enormous, and there are some fantastic photo opportunities here.

Top tip: Bring your camera, because you'll want plenty of photos from this tour!

And just like that, day one was over! We'd learnt so much and seen things I'd never imagined experiencing in person, so we headed back to the hotel for a well-earned rest before another early start.

Day 2: Watching a live SpaceX rocket launch

Rocket launching up to sky in bright white light with beautiful blue and orange cloud next to it.

Watching a live SpaceX rocket launch

Now, I promise you don't usually need to wake up at 6am to enjoy Kennedy Space Center! But when there's a rocket launch scheduled, sometimes you just have to make an exception.

We were up bright and early for a SpaceX launch at 6:33am, and by GOD, was it worth it!

The CRS-35 mission was carrying supplies to the International Space Station, with a reusable rocket booster designed to return to Earth and land after launch. Getting to watch the process unfold in real time was unforgettable.

We were incredibly lucky with the clear Florida weather. We could follow the launch as the rocket rose into the sky, with the sunrise lighting up one half of the sky while the other remained dark, with stars still twinkling above us.

It was truly magical.

What made it so special was knowing this wasn't a simulation or an exhibit. This was real space exploration happening right in front of us, and we were witnessing a rocket carrying essential supplies to astronauts living and working in space.

As someone who arrived knowing very little about space, this experience brought everything we'd learnt to life in the most incredible way.

My biggest recommendation? If you're visiting Florida and have the opportunity to watch a live rocket launch, DO IT! Launch schedules can change, so check the latest updates before your visit, but if you get the chance, it's an experience you'll remember forever.

Heroes & Legends

After our unforgettable early morning rocket launch, we headed back into the park for opening and watched the National Anthem ceremony before diving into another jam-packed day!

Our first stop was Heroes & Legends, where we learnt about the brave pioneers who ventured into the unknown and risked their lives to make space exploration possible. It was a brilliant reminder that behind every incredible mission are extraordinary people who helped make it happen.

Gateway: The Deep Space Launch Complex

Blue Origin New Shepard Flight to Space Virtual Reality Experience

Next, we headed to Gateway: The Deep Space Launch Complex to try the New Shepard Virtual Space Flight Experience by Blue Origin. This immersive simulator recreates the journey into space inside a replica of the New Shepard crew capsule. I found the experience surprisingly smooth, which I appreciated, although motion sensitivity can vary from person to person.

We also had the chance to write a letter that will be sent into space on a future commercial flight. How cool is that?! You can write about anything, from personal goals and dreams to heartfelt messages for loved ones. There's something so special about knowing your words will one day travel beyond Earth!

Spaceport KSC: Choosing our next adventure

Next up was Spaceport KSC®, and if you're a Walt Disney World Resort in Florida fan, imagine something similar to Soarin' Around the World, but instead it takes you on an adventure through space!

There are four journeys to choose from:

  • Cosmic Wonders: Explore supernovas, nebulae and the spectacular sights of the universe.
  • Daring Explorers: Journey to Jupiter, Saturn and their fascinating moons, Europa and Titan.
  • Red Planet: Discover Mars, from its ancient oceans to its infamous dust storms.
  • Uncharted Worlds: Venture towards the TRAPPIST-1 system and its intriguing exoplanets.

We opted for Red Planet, which was such a fun way to experience Mars from a completely different perspective. I love that you can choose a different journey on a return visit, giving you a reason to come back and try another adventure!

Afterwards, we explored the Space Shop, which is packed with space-themed souvenirs and goodies. Be warned, you'll probably want to take a little piece of your adventure home with you!

Discovering the universe at IMAX

We then headed to the IMAX theatre to watch Deep Sky, and I honestly came away amazed by how much I didn't know about the universe.

The film explores the incredible discoveries made possible by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), taking you deep into the cosmos to see distant galaxies and celestial wonders. It really puts into perspective just how much there is still to discover beyond our planet.

Chat with an Astronaut - Marcos C. Pontes

Chat with an Astronaut

One of the most inspiring moments of the day was meeting astronaut Marcos C. Pontes and hearing about his incredible journey from pilot to becoming the first Brazilian astronaut, before going on to pursue a career in politics in Brazil. It was fascinating to hear about his experiences and the path that led him to such a remarkable career!

His story was a reminder that incredible career paths can take you in directions you never expected, and it was so inspiring to hear about his experiences first-hand. Meeting someone who has actually travelled into space really brings everything you've learnt throughout your visit to life!

What I learnt: Space has a surprisingly distinct smell! Astronauts have described it as similar to hot, melted metal or even sulphur. Who knew?!

Hyperdeck VR: Our final mission

HYPERDECK VR

To finish our adventure, we headed to HYPERDECK VR for one last immersive experience.

This isn't just a ride where you sit back and watch. You become part of a virtual mission to the Moon, helping collect lunar minerals while experiencing the sensation of moving through space, complete with wind, heat and a full-motion floor.

It's an interactive, multi-sensory experience that puts you right in the middle of the action. Top tip: Reservations are required, and spaces are limited, so book your slot through the Kennedy Space Center Official Guide app as early as possible on the day.

Mission complete - our verdict on two days at Kennedy Space Center

And just like that, our two days at Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex came to an end!

I arrived knowing very little about space, but left feeling inspired, full of new knowledge and with a completely different appreciation for the incredible things humans have achieved. From standing beneath historic rockets to watching a real launch and meeting an astronaut, every experience offered something different.

My biggest takeaway? Give yourself two days if you can. There's so much to explore that rushing through in one day means you could miss some truly unforgettable experiences. Kennedy Space Center is absolutely worth adding to your Florida itinerary, for little ones, families and anyone curious about space like I was!
