Our guide to Avila and Segovia from Madrid

This full day excursion from Madrid takes you to the medieval city of Avila which proudly boasts the oldest and most complete fortified complex in Spain. The town is surrounded by an ancient wall that stretches for 2,500 metres and includes 90 fortified towers that date back to the 11th century. Avila was the birthplace of the mystic writer Saint Teresa of Jesus (1515 - 1582) and has been a pilgrimage site ever since. Within the city walls you will discover a large number of Romanesque style churches, gothic palaces and a fortified cathedral from the 12th century. There is an opportunity to visit Avila Cathedral and also enjoy wonderful panoramic views at the hill of ‘los Cuatro Postes’.

Next you will visit Segovia, a UNESCO World Heritage site, most famous for its incredible Aqueduct - a relic of the Roman Empire. Dating from the time of Augustus, it spans for ten miles and has one hundred and eighteen arches. Segovia is also renowned for its Alcazar, a stunning 11th century medieval castle, set on a rocky outcrop. A favoured royal residence for many Spanish kings, this fairytale castle was reputedly the inspiration for the Disney Castle.
