Orlando in autumn is a season of contrasts. You could be walking around in summer heat one afternoon and surrounded by pumpkins, twinkling lights and Halloween tunes the next.
September, October and November each bring a different version of Orlando, from late-summer warmth through to Halloween nights and the first hints of the festive season. That's exactly why the best autumn itinerary isn't always the one you'd plan for a summer trip.
We've put together this guide to help you decide which parks deserve your time, which experiences are worth building your trip around, and how to plan an autumn Orlando holiday that feels relaxed rather than rushed.
When is “Autumn” in Orlando?
Autumn in Central Florida moves through three distinct phases, and each one calls for a slightly different plan.
September - warm days and early Halloween cheer
September still feels a lot like summer in Orlando, with warm, humid days and the odd afternoon thunderstorm. It's also peak Atlantic hurricane season, so we'd recommend keeping an eye on the tropical weather outlook in the run-up to your trip and checking your travel insurance covers weather disruption.
The upside is that Halloween season is already underway by September, with seasonal decorations appearing and early Halloween Horror Nights and Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party dates on the calendar. September can also be a great month for value, with some of the best flight and hotel pricing of the year.
October - the Halloween sweet spot
October is when Orlando fully embraces the season. Decorations are everywhere, the EPCOT International Food & Wine Festival is in full swing, and both Universal and Disney are running their headline Halloween events.
Weather-wise, October tends to bring slightly more comfortable evenings while still feeling warm during the day. This is the month to build your trip around if Halloween atmosphere is a priority for you.
November - from Halloween into the festive season
Early November can feel quite different from late November. In the first couple of weeks, Halloween decorations are still around and the weather is often at its most pleasant all year. By Thanksgiving week, the mood shifts firmly toward the festive season, and both the parks and hotels get considerably busier.
If you'd rather experience the transition into Christmas than Halloween, early to mid-November is worth exploring.
Dutch school holidays and herfstvakantie
The autumn break, or herfstvakantie, is one of the biggest factors for Dutch families planning an Orlando trip, since it's the only real school-holiday window this side of Christmas. Schools in the Noord region tend to break around 10-18 October 2026, while Midden and Zuid schools tend to break around 17-25 October 2026. These are advisory "adviesdata" dates that can vary by individual school, so we'd recommend checking your own school's calendar before booking.
Hotels and Halloween event tickets around these dates tend to be in higher demand than the surrounding weeks, simply because so many Dutch and other European families are travelling at the same time. If your herfstvakantie dates are flexible, or you don't have school-age children, visiting just before or after this window can make for a calmer and better-value trip while still landing you in the heart of Halloween season.

Which Orlando theme parks are worth prioritising in autumn?
Universal Orlando Resort - your Halloween headquarters
Autumn is arguably one of Universal's best seasons, largely thanks to Halloween Horror Nights. In 2026, the event returns for its 35th year and runs on select nights from 28 August through to 1 November at Universal Studios Florida, making it one of the longest runs in the event's history.
Halloween Horror Nights isn't simply an add-on attraction. It's a separately ticketed evening experience that can shape your whole day, so we'd recommend deciding early whether it's part of your plan. You'll also want time for Universal Epic Universe, Universal's newest park, alongside firm favourites like Islands of Adventure.

Magic Kingdom Park - classic Disney magic with a seasonal twist!
Magic Kingdom Park leans fully into autumn, with seasonal decorations, themed treats and Halloween entertainment throughout the season. Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party runs on select nights from 7 August to 31 October 2026 and is a separately ticketed after-hours event, so we'd suggest checking the calendar and deciding whether you'd like to add it before you book.
On nights when the party is running, Magic Kingdom Park typically closes earlier than usual for guests without a party ticket, so building your day around the calendar will help you make the most of your visit either way.
EPCOT - a wonderful autumn pick for foodies!
Autumn happens to be one of the best times to visit EPCOT, thanks to the EPCOT International Food & Wine Festival, which runs from 27 August through to 21 November 2026. The festival transforms World Showcase with Global Marketplaces, live music and entertainment, all included with your regular EPCOT admission.
This gives EPCOT a different flavour to the rest of your trip, where savouring the atmosphere, the food and the live entertainment can take equal billing alongside the rides.
Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park - great additions if they suit your group
Disney’s Hollywood Studios is a strong choice if your group includes Star Wars or Toy Story fans, thanks to Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge and Toy Story Land.
Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park works beautifully as a shorter park day, which can free up time in your itinerary for an evening Halloween event or a well-earned rest.
Both are lovely additions to an autumn trip. If your days are limited, we'd suggest prioritising them once you've settled on your must-do parks.
Parks you might save for another trip
Not every park needs to make it onto an autumn itinerary, and that's absolutely fine. Here's how we'd think about a few of the other options.
- Water parks can still be lovely on a warm September day, but temperatures cool through October and November, and seasonal refurbishment closures are common later in the season. If you love a water park, September is your best window.
- SeaWorld Orlando is a great choice for coaster fans, but if Disney and Universal are already filling your days, it's an easy one to save for a trip with a little more time.
- Busch Gardens Tampa has excellent coasters of its own, but the drive from Orlando makes it better suited to a trip where you're not also trying to fit in several Orlando parks.
None of these are parks to avoid. In fact, several of our multi-park tickets, such as the Orlando FlexiTicket and the SeaWorld Parks Ultimate Ticket, already bundle in SeaWorld, Aquatica and Busch Gardens alongside Universal or Disney admission, so a visit to one of them can come at little extra cost if you decide it suits your trip after all.
They're simply parks that tend to work best when your trip has the time to give them their own dedicated day.
Mickey's Not-So-Scary or Halloween Horror Nights?

Both are wonderful experiences in their own right, and you don't need to choose both to have a memorable Halloween in Orlando. Picking the one that suits your group means you can put your budget and energy into really enjoying it.
Does a Halloween event ticket count as your day's park admission?
Not quite, and it's a common point of confusion. A Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party ticket lets you enter Magic Kingdom Park from around 4pm on your chosen event night, separately from any daytime park admission, so it doesn't use up a day from your Disney ticket.
Halloween Horror Nights works in a similar way: Universal Studios Florida closes to standard day guests before the event begins on select nights, and your Halloween Horror Nights ticket covers entry from that point onwards. If you'd also like to enjoy Universal Studios Florida during the day beforehand, that uses one of your regular park days as normal.
Choosing the right ticket for an autumn trip

Universal's 14-day tickets
Universal offers both the 14-consecutive-day tickets, such as the Universal Orlando All Parks Ticket and Three Park Adventure Ticket, and shorter multi-day and single-day options for a more flexible visit, including a combination ticket pairing one day of park-to-park access with one day at Universal Epic Universe.
One thing to look out for before booking: Universal's Volcano Bay water park is scheduled to close for refurbishment from 26 October 2026 to 24 March 2027, which is why there's a separate three-park ticket option (excluding Volcano Bay) for arrivals from late October onwards.
Lightning Lane Multi Pass and Universal Express Pass
Both resorts offer optional add-ons that let you reserve ride times in advance rather than joining the standard line: Disney's Lightning Lane Multi Pass and Universal Express Pass. These are sold separately from your park ticket.
During quieter September and early-November dates you may find you don't need them, while on busier dates, such as herfstvakantie week or peak Halloween Horror Nights nights, they can be a useful way to fit more into a shorter visit!
How many days do you need? Autumn itinerary ideas:
5 nights:
Choose a focus. A Universal-led trip could include Epic Universe, Islands of Adventure, Universal Studios Florida, a Halloween evening and a day to explore beyond the parks. A Disney-led trip could look similar, built around Magic Kingdom, EPCOT and your choice of Disney’s Hollywood Studios or Disney’s Animal Kingdom.
7 nights:
This is where combining Disney and Universal becomes realistic. We'd suggest leaving one evening or day flexible, since autumn weather and Halloween events can shift plans around.
10-14 nights:
With this much time, you can comfortably fit in Disney, Universal, a Halloween event, the EPCOT International Food & Wine Festival, some shopping, a pool day and a visit to Kennedy Space Center, along with proper downtime in between.
14 nights:
A classic two-week Florida holiday gives you the most flexibility of all, with room for both resorts at a relaxed pace, a Halloween event, the EPCOT Food & Wine Festival, a beach day, a water park and several genuine rest days without ever feeling rushed. This is also where Disney's 18-day usage window and Universal's 14-day consecutive ticket work particularly well together, since you can plan non-park days around them without losing value.
Whatever your trip length, we'd always recommend building in at least one non-park day for every few park days. A run of consecutive 12-hour park days in Florida's autumn warmth can be tiring, and a little breathing room tends to make the whole trip much more enjoyable!
What to pack - autumn weather in Orlando
- September: Pack for summer, with light, breathable clothing, plenty of sun protection and something waterproof for the afternoon storms.
- October: Days are still warm, so summer clothing remains the priority, though evenings can feel a touch more comfortable, so a light layer is a good idea for Halloween nights.
- November: This is the month Dutch visitors tend to ask about most, since "autumn" means something quite different at home. Daytime highs typically sit around 24-26°C (75-79°F), so summer clothing and sun protection are still needed for most of your park time. Evenings are noticeably cooler, generally 14-16°C (57-61°F) and dropping further as the month goes on, so packing a light jacket or cardigan for after dark is a good idea, particularly for an evening Halloween or festive event.
Across all three months, comfortable footwear is essential, and a portable phone charger and refillable water bottle will serve you well on longer park days.
Money-saving tips for an autumn Orlando trip
Autumn gives you a wonderful window to enjoy Orlando without needing to do everything at once. A few ways to make your budget go further:
- Book your hotel and theme park tickets early. Dates around herfstvakantie move quickly, and booking ahead generally means more choice and better value than leaving it late.
- Choose your parks deliberately. Work out which parks and events matter most to you before booking tickets, rather than defaulting to the biggest package available.
- Budget for Halloween events separately. Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party and Halloween Horror Nights both require their own tickets on top of standard park admission.
- Bring your own snacks and a refillable water bottle. Both Disney and Universal welcome outside food and drink into the parks.
- Consider a hire car and a supermarket run. If you're staying somewhere with a kitchen or fridge, like an Orlando villa, a visit to a local supermarket, such as Walmart or Publix, can work out considerably cheaper than buying every meal and snack in the parks.
- Make lunch your main park meal and consider dining off-site in the evening, particularly on days without a Halloween event.
- Stay somewhere with breakfast included or self-catering facilities to help manage daily food costs.
- Take a genuine rest day. A calmer day away from the parks costs little and helps you enjoy the days that follow even more.
