Our guide to Great Barrier Reef Adventure

Experience the breathtaking beauty of this world heritage natural wonder when you cruise to a spacious reef activity platform on the Outer Great Barrier Reef.

The stable reef activity platform is the perfect base for swimmers and non-swimmers to explore. Snorkel and/or dive, visit the underwater observatory, cruise in a semi-sub, or just relax on the sundeck with a delicious buffet lunch.

Join us and the Great Barrier Reef’s vibrant marine life for a voyage into one of the natural wonders of the world.

Example Itinerary (subject to change)

  • From 9.30am: Check in at the Great Adventures Reservations Counter inside the Cairns Reef Fleet Terminal to obtain your boarding pass.
  • 10:10am: Vessel boarding. Complimentary morning tea/coffee served on board. For your safety hot drinks are not served once the vessel is underway.
  • 10:30am: Depart Reef Fleet Terminal for the Outer Great Barrier Reef platform via Green Island.
  • 11:20am: Cake selection served on the forward journey. During your journey to the reef, a Reef Presentation is shown on the vessel’s monitors. Snorkelling demonstration by the crew.
  • 12:30pm: Arrive at the Outer Great Barrier Reef platform Reef activities commence… A semi-submersible coral viewing tour with informative commentary departs every 30 minutes or as advised. Snorkel directly from the platform. Collect your snorkel gear and buoyancy vests once on the platform. The underwater observatory is open throughout the day for coral and fish viewing. Pre-booked optional activities including introductory diving, Scuba-Doo and scenic helicopter flights commence as advised.
  • 1.00-2.30pm: Hot and cold buffet lunch is served. Time for more reef activities or just relax on the sundeck and take in the views! Tea and coffee is available whilst at the platform
  • 3:30pm: A blast on the ship’s horn will signal the time when all passengers should return to the vessel ready for departure.
  • 3:40pm: A passenger count is conducted before leaving the Reef. The crew will announce when this commences and we ask all passengers to co-operate during this very important procedure by not moving about the vessel.
  • 3:45pm: Departure to Cairns via Green Island. Complimentary cheese and biscuits served on the homeward journey.
  • 5:30pm: Arrive at Cairns Reef Fleet Terminal.

Terms and conditions for Great Barrier Reef Adventure

  • Northern Beach transfers include Palm Cove, Clifton Beach, Kewarra Beach and Trinity Beach.
  • If you did not select hotel transfer, please make sure to check in at the Great Adventures counters inside the Reef Fleet Terminal (1 Spence Street in Cairns) 1 hour before your departure time.
  • On very rare occasions, services can be subject to the effect of weather or unforeseen circumstances. Should a cruise not operate for any reason passengers will be offered an alternative day or a refund authorised.
  • Those wishing to dive will be required to fill out a medical questionnaire onboard before diving. Certain medical conditions and medications may preclude some people from diving. It is recommended a wait of 12 hours but preferably 24 hours if doing multiple dives, before ascending to an altitude of 300 metres or greater. Snorkelling can be a strenuous activity. Please use caution and inform the crew of any medical conditions. The minimum age for diving is 12 years.
  • Bring along a towel, sunscreen, hat, swimwear and camera to capture your memories. Limited underwater digital cameras are available to hire on board.
  • An Environmental Management Charge of $7.00 is levied on all adults and children 4 years and over entering the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage area. This charge is included in the above prices.
  • Surcharge: Due to potential significant volatility in supply & operational costs a surcharge may be applied due to unforeseen circumstances. In such cases, any charge will be collected on departure.
  • *Cancellation Policy: Free cancellations for bookings cancelled before your holiday departure date. No refunds are given for cancellations made post-departure.

Frequently Asked Questions for Great Barrier Reef Adventure

  • Can I change the date of my cruise?
    Yes, you are welcome to change your day of travel locally direct with the tour operator, providing there is availability. There are no fees to change dates. However, you must contact them a minimum of 24 hours before travel.
  • How do I check in before departure?
    Please check in at the Quicksilver reservations counter inside the Port Douglas Reef Marina. Check-in begins from 9.15am for vessel boarding at 9.30am. Quicksilver departs the marina at 10.00am. The staff will issue you with your boarding pass and direct you to our vessel.
  • What’s the best day or time to visit?
    Tours operate year-round every day is a holiday! Generally, you will find the warm air and water temperatures in the tropics make for comfortable conditions year-round for water activities. If you are visiting between May to October, while certainly not guaranteed, there is the bonus of potential whale sightings on the journey to and from the reef. Humpback whales regularly migrate from Antarctic waters every winter to the warmer waters of the Great Barrier Reef. They are most commonly sighted from June to September. The smaller Minke Whales can often be seen at Agincourt Reef from as early as April but from experience, the most common sightings occur from June to July.
  • How far out is the Outer Barrier Reef (Agincourt Reef) and how long does it take to get there?
    Agincourt Reef is 72km NE of Port Douglas. Travelling time aboard the state-of-the-art wavepiercer catamaran from Port Douglas to Agincourt Reef is 90 minutes.
  • What do I bring?
    Bring along a towel, sunscreen, hat, swimwear and camera to capture your memories. Limited underwater digital cameras are available to hire on board. A professional photographic service is also available for you to purchase photos of your day. For optional activities or onboard purchases like souvenirs or drinks from the bar, bring along your credit card or some cash.
  • Where do I wait for the coach pick-up?
    Generally at the hotel reception unless otherwise advised by hotel staff or Quicksilver upon confirmation of your tour.
  • Does lunch cater for vegetarians?
    Yes, the daily buffet lunch provides food options for vegetarians. Meals are prepared daily by the Catering Department utilising local produce wherever possible. All menu options are labelled with ingredients lists.
  • Can I smoke at the reef or on the boat?
    Due to government regulations and the comfort of all passengers, smoking is not permitted onboard any of the vessels. Smoking is only permitted in designated areas at the outer reef platform and island. Please ensure cigarette butts are disposed of responsibly in the receptacles provided.
