What to Do in Summer in New York
5 fun things to do in NYC!
Summer in New York can be an overwhelming business if you’re not prepared for the warm weather. However, it’s still one of our favourite times of year to be in the Big Apple and explore this beautiful city...

So, when the temperatures start to soar, where do you head to in New York? You’re probably going to want to be outside, so here’s some of our favourite things to do in sunny New York.

Take a Bike Tour

Bike tour in Central Park

What better way to explore New York than on two wheels? Travelling at a relaxed pace around some of New York’s biggest land marks, you can take the weight off your feet and get a little exercise in there too! There are two main areas to take you bike tour to choose from, starting with the Central Park Bike Tour. On this tour, you’ll explore the Bethseda Fountain, Strawberry Fields (a tribute to John Lennon) and the Jackie Kennedy Onassis reservoir among many other famous landmarks. You’ll also get to experience the beauty of Central Park in all it’s leafy, summery glory.

If you fancy something a little bit more urban, don’t miss the Brooklyn Bridge Bike Tour, which includes a tour of lower Manhattan, DUMBO and the historic Brooklyn Heights culminating in a memorable ride over the Brooklyn Bridge. This tour takes place on comfortable hybrid bikes, so no need to worry about being out of breath! They also provide an experienced guide, safety gear and snacks and bottled water.

Grab an Ice Cream (But not just any ice cream!)

If you’ve done any research on Instagram on places you want to visit in New York, you might have come across Milk ice cream shop already.

This is THE place to be this summer to cool off from the warm temperatures. Milk Bar rocketed to fame thanks to its cereal milk soft serve – creamy milky ice cream topped with cereal – but we love the birthday cake sprinkles soft serve too. If you’re exploring the financial district, make sure you pop in for an ice cream at 110 Wall St (although there are plenty of other locations to check out too!).

Take a Walking Tour

Stretch out those legs and join one of New York’s fun and diverse walking tours. From guided Gospel tours of Harlem to graffiti and hip-hop tours of the South Bronx, New York is a melting pot of different neighbourhoods and cultures waiting to be explored. We really recommend taking the Central Park Walking Tour of TV and Movie Sites (if you haven’t already explored on two wheels of course!) or the Slice of Brooklyn Neighbourhood Tour, a 4.5 hour multimedia sightseeing tour of Brooklyn’s famous neighbourhoods, landmarks and parks.

On the Slice of Brooklyn Neighbourhood Tour you’ll visit famous movie locations from films such as The Godfather, as well as exploring Brooklyn Height’s characteristic Brownstone homes and grabbing a pastrami sandwich and some cheesecake from the world famous Junior’s on Flatbush Avenue.

Take the Train Out to Coney Island

Coney Island

If you want a taste of nostalgic good fun, a trip to Coney Island is a must on your New York city summer holiday. There are old school theme park attractions to try out including Deno’s Wonder Wheel, plus all the fun of the Luna park attractions. There’s also a beach to lie out and relax on if you feel so inclined!

If you get peckish, indulge in another piece of nostalgia with a trip to Nathan’s Famous – the place to go for hot dogs, corn dogs and every other fried food you can imagine – you are on holiday after all!

Explore Governor’s Island

Did you know there’s an idyllic deserted island just a short ferry ride over the water? OK so there are no palm trees or sandy beaches here, but Governor’s Island has been effectively abandoned since 1996 when the last military families who made the island their home left for good. Since 2003 though, the island has been slowly transformed into a national park with bike hire, exhibitions, open houses and a pretty snazzy water-side bar to explore.

If you’re looking for something a little bit off the beaten track, check out the island’s events here. Upcoming events include a jazz age lawn party, an international day of yoga and even a ‘pinknic’!
