From watching a baseball game to heading Downtown, we spoke to bloggers and tourism group VISIT Staten Island about the top things to do on Staten Island.

From trying a traditional New York breakfast bagel to buying Empire State Building tickets and marvelling the famous city skyline, there are countless experiences to be had in the city that never sleeps. But after you’ve checked out the best New York attractions in Manhattan, you’ll also want to make sure you visit another of New York’s much-loved boroughs, Staten Island.

But how can you make the most of your visit to Staten Island? We spoke to several bloggers and tourism group VISIT Staten Island about the top things to do in this eccentric district.

See New York’s skyline from the Staten Island Ferry

Before you even step foot on Staten Island, you’ll get to experience one of its top attraction on your journey there. Manager of VISIT Staten Island,Colleen, told us why it’s such an incredible first impression of Staten Island.

“One of the must-do things on Staten Island just happens to be free. You have to get out on the water and take the Staten Island Ferry. The view of lower Manhattan cannot be matched anywhere else in New York City.”

If you want to see more of New York’s skyline from the water, we offer a range of New York sightseeing cruises that will give you the full experience, day or night, and include a wealth of lunch, dinner and entertainment options.

Go on a walking tour of Fort Wadsworth

Love exploring historic sites? Colleen recommends going on a walking tour of 17th century Fort Wadsworth. The park formerly guarded the entrance to New York Harbor and Manhattan for over 200 years, and its incredible military history can be uncovered on a fantastic tour.

“Travel back in time with a historic walking tour of Fort Wadsworth on the North Shore of Staten Island,” says Colleen. “Led by a National Parks Ranger, visitors can really discover how Staten Island played a role in the nation’s war history – over 200 years ago! Tours run throughout the summer and are free for all visitors.”

The Fort also offers a breathtaking vista of New York Harbor and Brooklyn as well as 226 acres of land to enjoy a stroll along the boardwalk, afternoon picnic, bike ride or even fishing.

Experience Staten Island’s culture at Snug Harbor

New York blogger Trudy from Rendezvous En New York highly recommends a trip to Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden when visiting Staten Island. “Snug Harbor Botanic Garden is a beautiful oasis on the island and a cultural centre. It’s a great way to spend the day with a date or family.”

Colleen also agrees that Snug Harbor is a great day out for all. “Snug Harbor, a former retirement home for sailors, is the place to go after taking a free Staten Island Ferry ride from Downtown Manhattan. Only two miles from the St. George Ferry Terminal, this 83-acre campus features three museums, a modern art gallery, 14 botanical gardens, a café, and a New York Chinese Scholar’s Garden – and it’s all in one place!”

Catch an evening show at the St. George Theatre

When the sun goes down, Staten Island’s nightlife comes out to play. If you enjoy watching live performances, an evening show at the St. George Theatre is the perfect end to the day, says Colleen.

“Experience modern performances in a historic setting by catching a show at the St. George Theatre, located right up the street from the free Staten Island Ferry. Opened in 1929 as a lavish movie palace and vaudeville theatre, the theatre boasts beautiful features including Spanish/Italian baroque style paintings, chandeliers, and an incredible dome - one of the largest cantilevered balconies ever built!”

Head downtown for Global cuisine

After experiencing some of the sights and working up an appetite, Colleen recommends heading Downtown where you’ll be able to find an eclectic selection of restaurants from a range of different cultures.

“Staten Island is well known for its Italian food and pizza, but there is so much more to taste,” says Colleen. “Explore the local cuisine in Downtown Staten Island where visitors can find dishes of all kinds including Sri Lankan, Indian, Mexican, American and Spanish - just to name a few!”

If you love Asian cuisine, Trudy has one recommendation in particular: “A great place to grab a meal is Miyabi Asian Fusion, where you can choose from sushi, Thai, and Japanese. The prices are very reasonable, and the service is always great.”

Watch a Staten Island Yankees baseball game

You can’t go to New York without watching a baseball game! And when visiting Staten Island, Anisa from Two Traveling Texans recommends watching a Staten Island Yankees baseball game.

“One of the best ways to spend an evening in Staten Island is at the ballpark. The Staten Island Yankees, a minor league team, play at Richmond County Bank Ballpark along the waterfront in St. George, which is right next to the Staten Island ferry terminal.

“You can enjoy a traditional American baseball game with beautiful views of the Manhattan skyline. Robinson Cano, Brett Gardner, and many other famous baseball players got their start here, so who knows, you might be watching one of the Yankees’ next big stars! Be sure to stay until the end, as most of the evening games have a fireworks display afterwards.”
