Take Time to Chill at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida

When you think of Walt Disney World Resort in Florida, we’re sure the first thing that comes to mind is the big thrills of the roller coasters and the excitement of the parades and shows. But what if we told you that there’s a chill side to Walt Disney World Resort too? A side where the whole family can take it slow. Laugh a little longer. Breathe a little deeper. Because to you, THAT is magic.

The best times to visit Walt Disney World Resort

If you want to maximise your chill time at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida, we’d recommend visiting during the off-peak seasons. This is usually when temperatures are slightly lower too, which is ideal if you're visiting with younger children. Consider these times of year when planning your Disney trip:

Time of Year

Perfect for

Why we recommend it

February Half Term

A short, chilled break

This is one of the coolest times of year to visit, with temperatures hitting a high of around 24°C. The parks tend to be quieter at this time compared to the Easter holidays, as this is also Spring Break for American visitors.

Late April

A spring holiday in term time

If you don’t need to stick to the school holiday calendar, late April is a great time to visit. The weather is warm but not at the highs of summer, and you’ll be in between the peaks of Spring Break and the beginning of summer.

Late August

A long summer holiday

If you want to do 2 weeks in Orlando as a family, you’ll probably need to visit during the summer holidays. We’d recommend visiting during late August compared to July, as most American children will have gone back to school by then. Temperatures will still be high, but they’re more manageable at the end of the summer.

Mid September

A holiday with younger children

This is another great time for anyone who can visit during typical school term time. With both UK and US schools not on holiday at this time of year, the parks tend to be at their quietest around mid-September.

October Half Term

A Halloween getaway

Most American schools don’t have an October half-term break, so there'll be fewer local families visiting at this time. The weather is still warm, although it can be cooler in the evenings, and there is a lot less rain compared to the summer months. Depending on the dates of the half-term break, you might even get to spend Halloween itself at Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, a separately ticketed event at Magic Kingdom Park!

The most chilled-out attractions at Walt Disney World Resort

If you want a more laid-back approach to your Walt Disney World Resort holiday, that doesn’t mean you have to miss out on the attractions! And don't forget to make the most of the unlimited access to the Disney Water Parks (whichever is open) that UK and Irish guests get with their Disney Magic Tickets; you could float down the lazy river every day of your holiday if you wanted to!

Frequently Asked Questions

General Information

  • Can we take it slow at Walt Disney World and avoid a strict schedule?

Yes! You can take things as slow or as fast-paced as suits you! With a 14-day Disney Magic Ticket you can get 14 days’ access to all the Disney Parks across 18 days, so you have plenty of time for rest and relaxation while still visiting the parks multiple times. The only things we’d recommend planning in advance are any table service restaurants you’d like to visit, as these can become fully booked; however, there are plenty of delicious quick-service restaurants throughout the Disney Parks and Resort hotels that don’t require any advanced booking!

  • Where are some quiet spots to relax at Walt Disney World?

These are some of our favourite spots to relax in the Disney Parks:

    • Magic Kingdom Park - rocking chairs near the Hall of Presidents in Liberty Square
    • EPCOT - Dreamer’s Point in World Celebration and the Twinings Tea Garden in the United Kingdom Pavilion
    • Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park - Discovery Island Trails and Nomad Lounge
    • Disney’s Hollywood Studios - Baseline Tap House and the Hollywood Brown Derby Lounge

There are also dozens of spots to relax in the Disney Resort hotels, so we’d recommend taking a day or two to explore some of them. Most areas (excluding pools and rooms) can be accessed by all guests, whether they’re staying there or not!

  • What are some fun things to do outside of the attractions at Walt Disney World?

One of our favourite things to do in the Disney Parks is spot Hidden Mickey’s; these are usually three circles resembling Mickey’s face and ears and could be on the floor, walls, ceiling… anywhere really! We’d also recommend getting the bus to Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge, where you can see giraffes, zebras and more roaming the savannah!

  • What’s the best day of the week to visit Walt Disney World?

There isn’t one particular day of the week that is less busy than others, but weekends will always tend to be busier than weekends as locals will also be in the parks. If you’re visiting during the Halloween or Christmas seasons, we’d recommend visiting Magic Kingdom Park on a party day, as a lot of people will avoid these days. You’ll have to leave the park early, but with your Park Hopper tickets, you can come back another day for the evening!

  • Is it worth staying on-site at Walt Disney World?

Yes! There are so many benefits to staying onsite at a Disney Resort hotel, including early theme park entry each morning, free transportation to and from the parks, early access to Lightning Lanes and dining reservations, Disney Dining Plans, and more. Plus, you'll be as close as possible to the parks, making it so easy to go back and forth to the magic.

Rides & Attractions

  • How can I keep kids entertained in the queues?

The Play Disney Parks app is perfect for keeping everyone entertained in attraction queues, with mini games and challenges themed around the area or attraction you're in. Games like I-Spy and Heads Up are also great for keeping the whole family entertained. Some attractions, like Seven Dwarfs Mine Train and The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh even have interactive elements incorporated into the queue itself!

  • Is Lightning Lane Multi Pass worth it for families with young kids?

If you know your little ones are going to get restless in longer queues, Lightning Lane Multi Pass is definitely worth it. This allows you to skip the regular queues for select booked attractions throughout the day, and if you can tick off more attractions on your park days you'll have more time for a couple of rest days during the holiday. You can even book up to three attractions per day in advance, so if there are any must-do attractions for your little ones you can make sure they're booked before you even arrive.
