Delve into Louisiana's history...

The Deep South is famous for its iconic plantations and this tour gives you chance to visit two of the most photogenic while also taking in some fabulous Louisiana scenery.

Our guide to Double Plantation Tour

Join the Double Plantation Tour and visit two of the iconic plantations which are situated along the Great River Road that winds along the Mississippi River between New Orleans and Baton Rouge.

Plantations were an important aspect of Deep South with the mild subtropical climate and fertile soils providing ideal conditions for crops such as sugar cane, cotton and indigo to grow and be harvested.

They were also the places where large numbers of workers, usually Africans held captive for slave labor, were required for agricultural production.

You will learn all about this history and more on this fascinating day tour.

Options

You can choose two of the following three plantations to combine:

Whitney Plantation:

In 2014, the Whitney Plantation opened its doors to the public for the first time in its 262 year history as the only plantation museum in Louisiana with a focus on slavery. Through museum exhibits, memorial artwork, restored buildings and hundreds of first-person slave narratives, visitors to Whitney will gain a unique perspective on the enslaved people who lived and worked there. The Big House is one of the finest surviving examples of Spanish Creole architecture and one of the earliest raised Creole cottages in Louisiana.

Laura Plantation:

This Creole plantation tour is based upon 5,000 pages of documents found in the French National Archives and upon Laura’s memories of the Old Plantation Home, in which she details 250 years of true-life stories of the Creole women, slaves and children who lived and worked here. On your journey to this historic plantation, you'll also have the opportunity to enjoy a panoramic view of Lake Pontchartrain as you cross the Bonnet Carre Spillway (the flood outlet of the Mississippi River).

Oak Alley Plantation:

Experience a bygone era in one of the South’s most beautiful settings-Oak Alley Plantation, built in 1839. Marvel at the unbelievable quarter-mile long alley of 28 magnificent Oak trees, each over 250 years old, and view the Majestic Cypress Trees in Louisiana’s swamps bordering the Mississippi River. Your guided tour will reveal the fascinating stories of the home and its history. Perhaps the most photographed plantation ever, Oak Alley has been the setting for many different motion pictures.
